Summon the Keeper Keeper Chronicles Tanya Huff Books

The story itself is great, and what you’d expect from Tanya Huff: likeable characters, witty banter and a strong storyline from start-to-finish. I have to take 2 stars away, however, as whomever was responsible for the Kindle version left typos and numerous instances of sentences lifted and inserted further down the page, which resulted in moments of frustration and confusion. For as much as the publisher is asking for the ebook version, especially given that they have no printing or shipping costs involved, I would expect the digital version to be proofread and held to the same standards given a print copy.

Summon the Keeper Keeper Chronicles Tanya Huff Books Reviews

Absolutely delightful. I hadn’t read science fantasy for awhile as I had lost interest. Now if I had had been reading items of this quality I wouldn’t have stopped. Fast moving, nice touches of humor and nobody is perfect. I appreciate the recommendation I had gottten from someone and would like to pass it on.
This book is a a lot of nonsensical nonsense, but entertaining. I found myself laughing out loud several times -- mainly at the "smart-mouthed" cat. You just wonder what the "hell" is coming next -- and "hell" has a big supporting role in the story.

Tanya Huff has a gift at comedy, or establishing comedic situations. If she had not taken up writing, I'm sure she would have been a great stand-up comic.
I originally read SUMMON THE KEEPER when it first came out and loved it, but after three moves, my copy had disappeared somewhere in the ether (or...wardrobe?) and I purchased a new one.

Even after so many years, the book was still funny and thoroughly enjoyable. The main character, Claire, finds herself summoned to the Elysian Fields Guest House during a stormy night. She, and her talking cat Austen, suddenly find themselves stuck when the previous owner leaves the guest house to Claire. She has no desire to "settle down," anywhere, but the guest house is not all that it seems. Within its walls is a lusty French-Canadian ghost, multi-colored mischief causing imps, a woman that's been asleep for decades - and has to stay that way, and a hole to Hell in the basement. Not to mention that the guests that come to stay seem to be a little...different. Like the indie rocker who is also a vampire or the geriatric Olympic Greek gods. If all that wasn't enough to distract her, the only other employee at the guest house is the hunky but extremely sweet and innocent Dean, who by mistake stumbles onto the supernatural world and now wants to help Claire out. Claire must either find a way to get out of the Elysian Fields Guest House or contend with keeping an eye on Hell (did I mention Hell talks?) for the rest of her life.

One thing I have always loved about Tanya Huff's writing is that her characters always seem three dimensional, with flaws and strengths. Claire thinks she knows what's best for every one but truly cares about those around her. Claire's sister is young and impetuous and extremely powerful but wants to show that she's grown up enough to work on her own.

All-in-all, SUMMON THE KEEPER is a sharp, witty, and well-written urban fantasy that still entertains every time I pick it up.
It takes me time to get into a book... But once in, I'm in it for good...
This was the case with Summon the Keeper. At first the interruptions of life and of taking care of a invalid hampered me.

I loved this book, so many of the themes and charters were so familiar! From the talking cat, to the assorted guests staying at the
Guest House.

The story is witty, pithy and takes you to places you know, and some you don't want to know, but can't help but be drawn to.

Inspiring! and hilarious. Well worth the read.
This is the first book of a the Keeper Chronicles trilogy. It's a deadly battle between good and evil, with a lot of sarcasm on both sides. Like other books by Tanya Huff, she simply drops you into the world she has made and lets you learn about the world as you go along. It can be a bit abrupt, but this new world is full of fun, fantasy, and of course talking cats who know all. Pick up the book, find a nice place to settle in and be aware you might not put the book down until you reach the end and then grab for the next book. And by the way, I have read the entire series multiple times, it's definitely a wonderful world to come and visit again and again.
Intelligent adult fantasy, complete with humor, a talking (smartass) cat (but that's redundant), a lustful French-Canadian ghost, and an interesting, very human, magic-wielding protagonist-- oh, and a Newfoundlander who is almost obsessively neat. They are all stuck in a small Canadian B&B, which our protagonist now owns, but only because there's a guest on the second floor who has been in a Sleeping Beauty-type magical coma for over 20 years, not because she is an innocent heroine but because she is pretty close to evil personified, and (to make matters more complicated for our protagonist) there is also a barely-sealed portal to Hell in the basement furnace room.

Add a neighbor who, while not literally the neighbor from Hell (that would be in the cellar), still fits the slang definition of one, and some technicolor mice, and you have the makings of a good urban fantasy... and one which helped invent the genre. The only difference is that most modern urban fantasies are expected to have two or three scenes of explicit sex, and of the two males leads in the story, our protagonist sees one as too young (the Newfie) and the other as too dead (the ghost). While she may be wrong on both counts (the cat thinks so, but then, he's a cat), it adds more sexual tension than explicit description, which is all for the best in the story. What happens in Book 2 of the trilogy, though, remains to be seen...
The story itself is great, and what you’d expect from Tanya Huff likeable characters, witty banter and a strong storyline from start-to-finish. I have to take 2 stars away, however, as whomever was responsible for the version left typos and numerous instances of sentences lifted and inserted further down the page, which resulted in moments of frustration and confusion.
