Oh that was a great story… a really wonderful story that I enjoyed every minute of reading.

Cat (Eliza’s friends from 2012 and bringer of fictional characters to life) wrote Eliza’s love story pretty open just making it so Eliza and Deveric would be only attracted to each but not already in love with each other. This way they could fall in love or not it would be up to fate..but of course they would fall in love. I really liked that. Love cannot be forced it needs to be nurtured and given time to grow.

Most girls want a fairy tale romance with a prince or duke at some point. I think we fail to consider what that really entails especially when time travel is involved. It was interesting to see Eliza try to adapt to her new surrounds. Anyone would be a bit of a fish out of water in her situation. It was definitely a bit of culture shock even though Eliza had read about the 1812 and did her research. Reading and experiencing are two very different things.

At times Eliza’s insecurities did get a little on my nerves. Truth be told there were a lot of them and they happened often. But after thinking about it if I was in the same situation I’d be a little insecure with such a handsome duke around and not being a size 2. Not to mention she missed all the conveniences of home.

Deveric was not infallible. He lost his first wife during childbirth and had vowed to never remarry. He fought tooth and nail not to follow his heart. It seemed almost irrational at time but he was really just that stubborn. He is a duke after all and a duke is always in control.

The little treat of Austen at the end was nice. Left me wondering how close of a relationship Eliza ended up having with her. I know it’s fiction but it would be cool if they had been friends and if Eliza had some kind of influence on Austen’s writing. Eliza did send Cat first editions signed by Austen so they had to have been pretty close right?

In a Man of Character, Eliza asks for Cat to write her into a Regency Romance and send her back in time to find a love match with a Duke. I truly enjoyed this time travel story. The only part that rang some what jaringly came from the fact that Eliza was presented as a literature scholar working on her Ph.D. with a dissertation on Jane Austin. She was a expert in the Regency period. Upon her arrival she made consistent glaring errors in speech and behavior, which would have been fun if she were merely a Austin enthusiast. But for someone who was up to Ph.D. level it was disturbing. Calling people by their first names without their permission upon first introduction comes to mind. She even realizes that she is doing this, but seems to continue anyway. Later in the book she manages to calm down but is bemoaning the loss of plumbing and other modern innovations. I Also wonder why she didn't take a solar charger for her cell phone. Well maybe I am being a bit picky, for I enjoyed it.
I didn't expect to like this story as much as I did because I'm not "into" Regency type stories....but I do like time travel stuff. And this sweet regency story begins in 2012 with a quick recap from the ending of book #1 A Man of Character (Magic of Love Book 1) (which I liked very much). 29 y/o Eliza James asks her best friend, Cat, to use her magic to send her (Eliza) back in time --- to write a love story for her giving her a HEA. Because it's Eliza's dream to live in Regency era England, to find true love from the dashing "Mr. Darcy's" of that era. But Eliza is so focused on her dream that she ignores the reality of what she's actually leaving behind...until things begin to unravel.

This was a wonderful story of a modern woman traveling to the year 1812 and meeting Lord Deveric Mattersley, Duke of Claremont. He's a man so wounded by tragedy and guilt and hides his vulnerabilities from everyone. He constantly questions whether he can ever find true emotional and physical happiness in his life. He's resigned to his miserable existence and feels he deserves his lot in life. Ms. Locke gives us strong character descriptions making it easy to connect to all the characters --- even the secondary characters. She gives perfect, clear visuals of both character and scenic. I loved that our protagonists were both well educated and strongly intelligent, solid characters. Ms. Locke conveys Eliza's "awakening" perfectly....that living in 1812 isn't the dream she thought it would be. I loved how Ms. Locke painstakingly drew me into Eliza's dilemma and led me... inch by wonderfully delicious slow inch, through each step and phase of progression of Eliza's new world. Ms. Locke so capably and thoroughly conveys the fears and uncertainty Eliza feels. Brilliant writing and equally entertaining.
