The laughs contained in Sam Bennett's "Memoirs of a Trumpet Teacher" are endless. The author expertly intertwines the hardships and frustrations of a professional music teacher with hilarious stories of his students, their families, and their lives. Having been a cornet, the trumpet's mellow cousin, semi-master (sarcasm intended) in elementary school, I have some idea what Sam went through, including what to do with the spit.

But I wanted to focus on what Mr. Bennett left out of his autobiography: dedication. This was a tough job. Not only did he have to drive scores of miles, some of the time in snowstorms, but when the student didn't show he didn't get paid. There was no employer funded medical or life insurance with this job, nor workers' compensation or a retirement plan. And Sam didn't exactly live in a low cost area either.

This is a book with humorous antidotes, but it was only possible because the author was dedicated to music. Musicians, music teachers, or any artist will enjoy this book.

Memoirs of a Trumpet Teacher is a very funny look into human nature. It's a must read for those thinking of teaching music and will make you appreciate all that a music teacher goes through. It won't be long before one of the stories reminds the reader of a funny story from their own music lessons.
I loved this book from beginning to end. I laughed so hard that I cried. What a lovely romp through the suburbs with Mr. Bennett and his trumpet. Having 2 sons of my own that grew up having music lessons I could easily relate to these funny stories. I enjoyed hearing about them from the teachers point of view. Thanks for sharing Mr. B.
I'd seen "Memoirs of a Trumpet Teacher" mentioned on Facebook and since I took guitar lessons as kid I wanted to hear about music lessons from a teacher's perspective. The author, Sam Bennett, seems to have a way of putting the reader right in the middle of a lesson with him and his students. Witty and well paced, I didn't want to put it down!
If you need to chase away the blues, this is the book that will do it. There is no topical or mean-spirited humor. It is just plain funny. Very funny.
This book will make you laugh! If you are an instrumental music teacher or a parent with kids that have taken private lessons, this book will shed a new light on situations that you may have been frustrated with and make you smile at what other kids have done. For others who like to hear stories about kids, you'll enjoy this, too!
A funny and warm-hearted book that ought to be required reading for anyone who has ever taught trumpet or any other musical instrument - and for anyone who has tried to learn one. Also highly recommended for all teachers and students, both current and former. And for anyone who would enjoy a series of almost-too-good-to-be-true tales told by a man with a wry sense of humor and an eye for detail. We eagerly await Mr. Bennett's next book.
Lots of laughs! I gave a copy to my trumpet teacher. Wonder how I'll appear in his memoirs!

Apparently the author's name is a pseudonym. Most stories are either fictitious, embellished, or widely exaggerated.
